Peppermint is one of the most popular and widely consumed species worldwide, and is used in the medical as well as in industrial and culinary fields. The importance of M. piperita is mainly due to its essential oils (EOs) and polyphenols. It is hybrid mint, across between water mint and spearmint. Fresh or dried peppermint leaves are often used alone in peppermint tea or with other herbs in herbal tea (tisanes, infusion). Peppermint is used in flavoring ice cream, candy, fruit preservers, alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, toothpaste, and some shampoo, soap and skin care products.
